Whenever the open-border/pro-illegal alien forces comment, whine, and complain about Americans who want to secure our borders and have our immigration laws enforced, they inevitably always invoke the cry of “racism.”
Want to build a wall on the border? It’s racist.
Want to send the military to support the overwhelmed U.S. Border Patrol? That’s racist.
Want to keep illegal aliens from voting? You’re a racist, man.
“Racism” is invoked to try to shut down the discussion, especially if your facts and logic are winning the argument. Wanting our laws enforced is not racism. And during any debates about illegal immigration, there is one simple response to the “racism” claim that I have used repeatedly, and it usually shuts down the person crying racism. It was recommended to me by an Immigration Naturalization Service official.
For immigration reform activists who are debating on the radio, television, or simply blogging on a news story when the open borders zealot yells racism, you respond thusly:
“What does race have to do with it? A person’s race doesn’t give them the right to sneak into our country and break our laws. Is that what you’re saying, that a person’s race gives them the right to break the law?”
Then you shut up, and let the other person respond. Typically, that last question will result in dead silence.
I then follow up with, “I don’t care if they are from Mexico, Brazil, or Ireland. If they didn’t come into our country legally, I don’t want them here.”
Years ago, I debated the spokeswoman for an organization whose name translated into English means “The Race” on TV. Ironically enough, I used the example above. After employing it on two consecutive appearances, she informed the producers of the show that she no longer wanted to debate me.
She couldn’t shut down the discussion by playing the race card, and she had no answer to the question which made her look bad to the audience.
Now you runt he risk of ending the debate by asking your opponent if they are saying that a person’s race gives them the right to break the law. But your audience will get it.
