Until recently, the Mexican drug cartels always kept their unrelenting violence out of the country’s resort towns, a sign that the albeit corrupt government still had some, at least a little, sway with the cartels.
However, that has all changed …
-In March 2018, The State Department issued a travel warning for the Mexican resort city of Playa del Carmen. The warning came two weeks after a bomb went off on a ferry linking Playa del Carmen with the town of Cozumel. The explosion wounded 25 people, including two American citizens.
A few days after the explosion took place, several improvised explosive devices were found on another ferry in the same area.
-In September 2018, the bodies of two Mexican marines were discovered in the popular resort town of Cancun. Both men had been stabbed to death.
-In August 2018, police found eight bodies in Cancun, in just one day.
USA Today reported:
On Tuesday, the bodies of a man and a woman were found stuffed in the trunk of a taxi early Tuesday in the Paseos del Mar neighborhood of Cancun, local newspaper Riviera Maya News reported. The bodies have not yet been identified.
Authorities discovered dismembered bodies of two men in multiple plastic bags at another location later that day. Another man was discovered bound and fatally shot. The prosecutors’ office for the state of Quintana Roo said another man was killed while lying in a hammock, while another was found shot and covered in a plastic bag.
Authorities found the eighth victim decapitated in the neighborhood of Tres Reyes.
-In January 2019, seven men were shot to death at the “Las Virginias” bar in Playa del Carmen by two gunmen. The hitmen were never captured.
“Since 2017, violence has spread to a large part of the southeastern state of Quintana Roo, allegedly as a consequence of the dispute between the Jalisco Nueva Generación and Los Zetas drug cartels for control of the region,” reported The Yucatan Times.
Acapulco, once considered the jewel of Mexico’s tourism industry has been reduced to little more than a killing field, as evidenced by the 874 murders that took place in that city, in 2018 alone.
This degeneration demonstrates the complete control the drug cartels now enjoy over the entire nation of Mexico.
Thinking of taking a vacation? Don’t forget that Florida has sunny beaches as well (without the decapitated bodies).
