A group of mostly Republican Congressmen/Congresswomen have signed a discharge petition to bring an amnesty bill to the floor for a vote. The process is complex, and seemingly ridiculous, but the gist is that the discharge petition could bring the DACA Amnesty bill up for a vote, where if passed, it would amnesty a predicted 3-plus million “Dreamers.” But knowing how faulty the counting of illegal aliens is and has historically been, it could easily be double that number before all is said and done.
Presuming that all 193 Democrats support the discharge, only 25 Republicans are required to pass it. As of May 9th, twenty had signed.
Jeff Denham (CA-10) is the sponsor of HR 774. Why would Republicans vote to bring an amnesty bill to the floor when it is obvious, and has been for years, that American people don’t want to reward illegal aliens with residency in our country?
I think the simple answer for many of them is, he coming Election. A quick look back at the 2016 Presidential vote totals in certain Congressional Districts tells the tale.
Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the following congressional Districts:
Jeff Denham (CA-10), David Valadao (CA-21) and Steve Knight (CA-25)
Mike Coffman (CO-06)
Carlos Curbelo (FL-26) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27)
Leonard Lance (NJ-07)
John Katko (NY-24)
Ryan Costello (PA-06)
Will Hurd (TX-23)
David Reichert (WA-08)
Those who have signed the discharge petition from Congressional Districts Trump won:
Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) (Trump won by less than 2 points.)
Fred Upton (MI-06) and Dave Trott (MI-11)
Mark Amodei (NV-02) (Trump won by more than eleven points.)
John Faso (NY-19) and Eise Stefanik (NY-21)
Chris Collins (NY-27) (Trump 59.7%.)
Charles Dent (PA-15) (Trump won with 69.8% of the vote.)
Mia Love (UT-04) (Trump received more votes in her district, but only 39.1 %.)
Neil Munro of Breitbart News described the effort:
“If the … GOP members can collect a total of 25 GOP signatures on their discharge petition, then 193 Democrats will join them to get the 218 signatures needed to stage a floor vote, despite leadership opposition. Their planned floor vote will be a rare “Queen of the Hill” debate around four bills. That plan will allow business-first GOP legislators to unite behind an amnesty bill that will pass with support from 193 Democrats – and also split their votes to ensure the failure of pro-American immigration bills.”
One of the four bills is H.R. 3440, The Dream Act of 2017, which has 196 Democrat cosponsors.
The effect of any kind of amnesty would probably negate all the deterrent rhetoric that the Trump Administration has been sending to the world, including increased enforcement, discussion, and now the start of construction of the border wall. Once again, an amnesty would convince all those wanting to come, tens of millions if not hundreds of millions, that all they have to do is get here and eventually they will be allowed to stay.
Those who support this and any kind of amnesty, are either ignorant or do not care about the eroding effects that massive illegal immigration has on our country and our culture.
