California’s junior Senator, Kamala Harris, has now compared the “perception” of Immigration and Customs Enforcement by some to the Ku Klux Klan at the Senate hearing Thursday to confirm Ronald Vitiello as the new head of the U.S. Immigration Customs and enforcement (ICE).
She was clever about it. When Vitiello said, “The Klan was what we could call today a domestic terrorist group … . Based on race and ethnicity… .” Harris drew the comparison by responding:
And are you aware of the perception of many about how the power and discretion at ICE is being used to enforce the law and do you see any parallels?
That puts ICE in the same category as the KKK. Is that what you’re asking me?, he said.
No, I’m very specific in what I’m asking you. Are you aware of a perception that they way that they … ,” Harris said.
I see none, Vitiello said.
Are you aware that there is a perception that ICE is administering its power in a way that is causing fear and intimidation, particularly among immigrants and specifically among immigrants coming from Mexico and Central America?, Harris asked.
Like I said, clever. But she obviously made the KKK reference to purposely put ICE and the Klan in the same category.
She also purposely used the incorrect term for illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America by referring to them as “immigrants.” Unless a legal immigrant has broken some law here in America, they don’t need to be fearful or intimidated by immigration authorities. But she knows that. She is playing to an audience that wants an unrestricted influx and no borders.
A few months ago, Harris opined: “I think there’s no question that we’ve got to critically re-examine ICE, and its role, and the way that it is being administered, and the work it is doing. And we need to probably think about starting from scratch.”
So Kamala Harris, named as one of dozens of potential presidential candidates in 2020, has not come out specifically calling for the abolishment of ICE, as have many of her Democratic colleagues. But her sympathies are clear, she opposes immigration law enforcement.
