Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan announced on Monday, September 23, that the Department of Homeland Security is ending the policy known as “catch and release” as early as next week.
McAleenan said, What we’re doing with Central American families now that’s ending the catch and release process is that if they don’t have a fear or claim, they’re going to be repatriated in a streamline fashion, or if they do have a fear or claim, asked to wait under the Migrant Protection Protocols in Mexico.
This commonsense policy is the result of the Supreme Court’s decision on September 11 following a Trump Administration rule regarding asylum seekers to be enforced nationwide, while it is still being challenged in the lower courts. The new (old actually) rule prohibits applying for asylum in the United States if the person has traveled through another country without having sought asylum protection there. The other country in this case is usually Mexico, since most of those currently applying for asylum are from Central America and have traveled through Mexico to reach our southern border.
Phony asylum claims have skyrocketed in recent years, as the smuggling cartels tell their cargo how to take advantage of our asylum policy, which has flooded the system to overflowing.
McAleenan said in July that only about a quarter of the illegal aliens claim “credible fear” of returning to their nation of origin.
In March of this year, the U.S. Border Patrol began releasing families in custody into the United States, with a notice to appear in court. But, of course, most don’t appear in court. They just disappear into the country, many into sanctuary cities, change their name, not using the one they gave the border patrol, and that’s that for most of them.
The, understandably, cynical border patrol agents refer to the “Notice to Appear” as “a Run Letter,” since fewer than 10 percent have historically appeared for their hearing.
This policy, supported at least temporarily by the Supreme Court, will send a very important discouraging message to those planning to travel to our southern border and then lie to try to gain entry to our country. It’s another step in the right direction to regain control of our borders and protect our country, our culture, and our citizens.
You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. [Winston Churchill.]
