Today’s world press is drawing attention to riots in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, staged by Ethiopians and their sympathizers protesting police brutality [see: ‘Riot engulfs Rabin Square as anti-police brutality protest spins out of control,’ Jerusalem Post, 05/03-04/2015]. Police “were struck repeatedly by a volley of rocks, sticks, and plastic and glass bottles,” according to witnesses, leaving dozens injured. The JP quoted rioters as saying,”Yes,” they have been inspired, at least in part, by recent anti-police protests in Baltimore: “Israel copies everything from the US. They’ve copied the way the US treats black people.”
Over 130,000 Ethiopians are believed to reside in Israel at this time. They claim descent from “Lost Jews” who left the Middle East centuries ago and now demand full Israeli citizenship under the “Right of Return.” Critics believe that many, perhaps most, are seeking better conditions at the expense of Israeli taxpayers.
Last month Israel’s Interior Ministry Administration of Border Crossings, Population & Immigration (BIPA), announced that illegal African migrants would be given the choice of leaving voluntarily to a “safe third-party” country in Africa [such as Rwanda and Uganda] or face imprisonment. Those subject to deportation include Eritrean and Sudanese, who have applied to asylum. Thousands have been held in detention centers in the Negev Desert. According to the Interior Ministry, “An infiltrator [i.e. illegal alien] who agrees with this procedure will begin the preparations for leaving. An infiltrator who refuses will face a hearing following which it will be decided whether they will be imprisoned.”
Interior Minister Gilad Erdan said the measure would “encourage infiltrators to leave Israel in a safe and dignified way, and will be an effective tool to upholding our duty to the citizens of Israel—and south Tel Aviv in particular—to restore the fabric of life they were accustomed to.” Since the beginning of 2014, several thousand migrants left Israel, many for their country of origin. Well done, Israel. Illegals are a burden on any society. Israel’s policy of repatriating ‘infiltrators’ to their home countries should be applauded. Would that our federal immigration authorities followed Israel’s example.
