President Trump’s message to the nation about border security and the wall on Tuesday night was succinct and to the point. It is the kind of talk that many Americans like to hear. We’ve heard it in the past from many elected to the public payroll.
President Bill Clinton said in his 1995 State Of The Union, that “all Americans” were right to be “disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering [the United States],” and that illegal aliens “impose burdens on [U.S.] taxpayers.”
In 2006, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) said that “… better fences and better security …” would help stem “… the tide of illegal immigration in this country.” Seven years later as President, he said in his 2013 State of the Union address that, “Real reform means stronger border security.”
In 2015, presidential wannabe Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) said that she voted “… numerous times when I was a senator to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in, and I do think you have to control your borders … . We need to secure our borders, I’m for it, I voted for it, I believe in it.”
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also voted in favor of the Secure Fence Act in 2006, and said in a speech about illegal immigration, “If you don’t think it’s illegal, you’re not going to say it. I think it is illegal and wrong, and we have to change it.”
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has claimed that she supports a border fence.
Senator and future Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE) voted for the Secure Fence Act in 2006.
And in 2013, House Minority Leader and now current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), referred to border security as a “basic principle,” and urged congress to support legislation that would secure the U.S. border.
What do they say today?
In a rebuttal to President Trump, House Speaker Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that President Donald Trump was “manufacturing a crisis” over his fight to get $5.7 billion in border security funding.
They are unanimous in opposing the border wall at a time when thousands of Central Americans will be added to tens of thousands more from Mexico and other countries from around the world who will attempt to enter our country illegally this year.
To paraphrase another Senator and Presidential wannabe, they were for the wall, before they were against it.
You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. [Winston Churchill.]
