California, once the Golden State that everyone in the country admired half a century ago, has moved in another direction, some would say to the Left, on healthcare. Sunday, June 9, the California state budget was announced, and illegal aliens up to the age of 25, will be eligible for the state’s health care program for the poor. It also requires all residents to carry health insurance.
“California adults who do not purchase insurance will instead have to pay a penalty — money that will be used to expand subsidies for individuals and families making up to six times the poverty level.”
In recent years, California has become a single party state run by the Democrats. And when one party controls all areas of the government, Executive, Legislative, and Judicial, there is no deliberation on issues. The democratic process is eliminated, as there is no debate using facts to support or oppose an issue.
Illegal immigration is supported by the Governor and a majority in the State Assembly. California is a sanctuary state that, as official policy, will not cooperate with the federal government when it comes to immigration law enforcement.
It has been estimated by the Sacramento Bee that at least 1.8 million illegal aliens in California are uninsured. The real number is probably three times that. In any case, for the last 25 – 30 years, illegal aliens who got sick went to the nearby hospital’s emergency room (ER) for non-emergency health care treatment. Many were told to call an ambulance to transport them, which ambulance companies did, regardless of the fact that most medical issues were not emergencies.
There was a time in the 1990s when the costs of ER visits by illegal aliens where available to review, but those days are long past.
In January of this year, the California Department of Public Health produced a Fact Sheet called Full-Scope Expansion for Undocumented Adults, Ages 19-25.
Specifically, this proposal would:
- Provide full-scope Medi-Cal to otherwise eligible applicants and beneficiaries, ages 19 through 25, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
- Require coverage to begin no sooner than July 1, 2019.
- Require the Department of Health Care Services to claim federal funds to the extent the Department determines they are available.
- Require eligible individuals to enroll in a managed care plan, where available.
- Transition beneficiaries, ages 19 through 25 who are receiving restricted-scope Medi-Cal, to full-scope Medi-Cal when the Department implements this proposal.
In short, mandatory healthcare coverage will soon be the law in California. Those who do not get insured will be fined. Sounds a lot like the Affordable Healthcare Act, also known as Obamacare, which was eliminated in 2017.
The fines will be used to subsidize individuals and families who make up to six times the poverty level.
And since nearly all of the illegal aliens who are welcomed by the state are low income wage earners, nearly all of them will be subsidized by California residents, most of whom are citizens or legal immigrants.
The part about “claiming federal funds” is interesting. I am hoping the federal government determines that it isn’t the responsibility of taxpayers across the country to subsidize California’s illegal behavior.
