Those with a driver license from the illegal alien sanctuary state of California have until October 1, 2020, to apply for Real I.D. If they don’t, or can’t, they won’t be able to use their CA Driver’s License to board an airplane, as TSA will no longer accept it as a valid I.D. Don’t delay.
Real I.D. was passed by Congress in 2005 as a result of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers having over 60 driver licenses between them from various states, which essentially allowed them to hide in plain sight. Only 15 years after Real I.D. was passed, the feds are finally cracking down on California.
You will see this warning on the website:
Note: Individuals applying for or renewing an AB 60 driver license are not eligible to receive a REAL ID driver license.
What is an AB60 Driver License? It’s from Assembly Bill 60 which “… is a bill passed into law that, in effect, allows undocumented immigrants to the United States to apply for a California driver’s license with the CA Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).”
That would be “illegal aliens.” It was signed into law by Gov. Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown and became effective January 1, 2015. It comes with the following caveats:
This is a special driver’s license that:
- May NOT be used for identification purposes.
- MAY be used to drive anywhere throughout the state of California.
- Has a distinguishing feature and notice on the front of the license indicating that it is for driving purposes only, per the AB-60 law (i.e. “DP” instead of “DL”).
- Cannot be used against the license holder to determine their immigration status or citizenship, or detain them in any way for reasons other than valid traffic violations.
Now the first caveat may appear ridiculous to some, “May NOT be used for identification purposes.”
It would seem that if the California Highway Patrol, or any other state’s law enforcement, pulled the driver over for any infraction, the first thing the license does is identify the driver. Well, thus flows the “logic” from the California Assembly. I lobbied against this bill for years, but they finally got it through and it was signed into law.
The last one is equally ridiculous. If getting an AB60 driver license isn’t probable cause to at least ask the question about immigration status, what is? Another irony is that of the documents deemed a “valid foreign document” and eligible to get you an illegal alien driver license in California: the Mexican Voter I.D. card. You can’t vote in Mexico without it. Interesting.
Well, I just renewed my driver license with Real I.D., and it took three trips to the DMV. I received incomplete information and had to track down other documents.
One interesting interaction, California now requires two items of proof of residence: a utility bill, tax info, etc. I pulled out an envelope and asked, “Will you accept this as one piece of proof?” “What is it?” she asked. “It’s the notification from the DMV that my license is due to expire, and I have to renew it. You see, It was mailed to my home address,” I said, pointing to my home address. “Uh, I don’t know, I, I don’t think so,” she said. She asked a co-worker who also admitted she didn’t know.
But on the third visit, after two and a half hours, and working with two very competent gentlemen who were, let’s say, older, I accomplished the goal, and in a few weeks, I will be able to board an airplane with my California Driver License with the Golden Bear.
Ironically, after my mini-ordeal, I checked my email and saw that over 60% of those polled in the state of New York opposed giving driver licenses to illegal aliens. Regardless, it’ll happen.
Sometimes you just have to laugh.
