Pregnant women have been crossing the U.S. border illegally for years.
It’s commonly known abroad that anybody born on U.S. soil, regardless of the mother’s citizenship, is guaranteed U.S. citizenship.
I resided in Mexico for many years, and they certainly know about our policy there.
And this policy encourages pregnant women to cross the border illegally, which is extremely dangerous for them and their unborn children.
And just imagine starting in Central America (or beyond) and traveling all the way across Mexico to get to the United States.
Our insane birthright citizenship policy actually puts foreigners’ lives in danger, besides taking nationality policy out of the hands of Americans.
Now, President Biden has made this even worse by publicly announcing that they won’t be detained. Yes, the Biden administration has publicly declared that pregnant women (and those who have recently borne a child) will not be detained.
That’s a shout out, not just to women in Mexico and Central America, but to women all over the world.
Let’s look at how the New York Times reported on this. The Gray Lady’s article on the topic is entitled Biden Will End Detention for Most Pregnant and Postpartum Undocumented Immigrants, by Eileen Sullivan, New York Times, July 9th, 2021.
Here’s how the article starts: “The Biden administration is easing restrictions placed on undocumented people who are pregnant, postpartum or nursing, the latest change in its broader efforts to soften immigration detention policies put in place by former President Donald J. Trump.”
So the Biden administration is ‘softening’ the cruel policies of the evil Donald Trump.
So why is there more mayhem on the border under Biden?
“Under the new policy, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers generally will not detain or arrest people who are pregnant or nursing, or who had a baby within the previous year.”
Not only are pregnant women eligible for this, but any woman who’s “had a baby within the previous year.” So what if she doesn’t have the baby with her, will they take her word for it?
And, since Biden has ushered in an era more woke and inclusive than ever, this has to be added: “The language in the policy will be gender neutral, acknowledging that transgender men can give birth — another departure from past directives.”
Thanks for telling us that, New York Times!
The article goes on to inform us that in the evil days of Donald Trump, pregnant women were actually detained.
“The number of pregnant immigrants in detention increased sharply under Mr. Trump, who reversed a policy put in place in 2016 by President Barack Obama that called for detaining them only under extraordinary circumstances.”
But even that Obama policy didn’t go far enough.
“Immigration advocates welcomed President Biden’s new policy, which they said went even further than the 2016 version that was issued when he was vice president.”
However, even the Times recognizes a potential problem with the new, enlightened Biden Border Policy: “But like Mr. Biden’s other immigration policies to date — all of which have been made through executive orders or directives and not codified in law — protections for undocumented pregnant and postpartum immigrants could disappear under a future administration, just as Mr. Trump rewrote Mr. Obama’s policy.”
Aha, there’s the rub! Just as Obama, then Trump, and now Biden have changed immigration policy using executive authority, so can a post-Biden president. Trump II? Ron DeSantis? Somebody we’re not even thinking of now?
The New York Times brings up the relevant matter of birthright citizenship: “Though the new policy will affect only a small number of immigrants [really, how small?], it could rankle some conservatives who previously supported an effort by Mr. Trump to nullify the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship, in part to deter migrants from trying to get into the country to deliver babies.”
The “constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship”? It’s more correct to say current policy is based on a dubious interpretation of the 14th amendment to the constitution. The policy should be changed, whatever it takes to change it.
Meanwhile, the Biden Border is becoming more and more dangerous.
