While the debate over the coming immigration bill descends into ridiculousness, the issue of DACA, the so-called “delayed action for childhood arrivals,” is key to the Democrats. A memo dated January 8 about DACA by former Clinton communication director, Jennifer Palmieri, has revealed their true goal: to secure future voters. It is spelled out quite clearly:
“The fight to protect Dreamers is not only a moral imperative, it is also a critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success,” reads Palmieri’s memo.
“If Democrats don’t try to do everything in their power to defend Dreamers, it will jeopardize Democrats’ electoral chances in 2018 and beyond. In short, the next few weeks will tell us a lot about the Democratic Party and its long-term electoral prospects.”
We’ve all heard the mindless response to the immigration problem for years, “The Republicans want cheap labor and the Democrats want voters.” Immigration policy is more complicated than that, but there is some truth to it. And Palmieri makes it very clear, DACA is about new Democrat voters.
Why should illegal aliens, regardless of how they got here, be put on a path to citizenship, jumping the line in front of millions of legal immigrants who have honored our laws and come here legally? Because it creates Democrat voters, according to Ms. Palmieri.
I oppose amnesty for illegal aliens because, first and foremost, it creates expectations in the world of future amnesties and puts more people into the pipeline.
But for those legislators who feel they must “do something for the kids,” here is a suggestion: create a new category of “Permanent Resident.”
Currently, permanent residents can apply for citizenship. They are not required to. I have an acquaintance who has been in America for 45 years and still carries her “green card,” because she has never naturalized.
Create a new class of Permanent Resident for the “Dreamers” that:
- Does not allow them to naturalize, hence no citizenship.
- Does not allow them to petition for family members.
Add that to any DACA legislation and look for the Democrats to howl. Because it isn’t about “the kids,” it’s about creating Democrat voters.
It would be interesting to hear their reasons for opposing this idea.
