As the end of summer nears and the 2020 election cycle begins in earnest following Labor Day, actions on immigration law enforcement are likely to accelerate as the federal government moves to increase enforcement and put into place policies that will, among other things, send a deterrent message to the feeder countries that are the source for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of illegal aliens who are considering the journey across our southern border.
Ending the 2015 Flores Rule, limiting the time illegal aliens with children can be held in detention, is just the beginning.
Ending so-called Birthright Citizenship is on the table.
It’s going to be a busy season in the courts and in public on the campaign trail.
The recent, limited but surprising, ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on August 16th allowing an asylum ban under specific circumstances at border crossings in Texas and New Mexico, is a step in the right direction.
On July 16th, President Trump issued a new rule requiring asylum seekers to apply for asylum in the first country they entered, instead of waiting until they reached the United States.
The rule denies asylum to migrants who pass through another country on their way to the United States without applying for asylum at the first county they entered. The majority of migrants trying to enter the United States do not apply in any other nation first.
A lower court judge in the 9th Circuit in July had ruled that the policy could open up migrants to abuse by forcing them to apply in other nations first.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision allows the rule to take effect in Texas and New Mexico.
One important aspect of this positive development is the deterrent message it sends to folks in foreign countries who are being told they can use the asylum process to get into the United States. Cartel recruiters use any and all stories, lies, and real possibilities to convince people to spend their time, their money and risk their lives to make the illegal trip.
The next step is to get this deterrent message on the news and social media in the feeder countries to let people know that this door is closing.
It’s being reported that Tom Perez, the Chairman of the Democrat National Committee, will be holding three DNC fundraising events in Mexico City at the end of September. Hopefully he will whine about this new ruling and the other enforcement efforts soon to be announced, and his complaints will be heard throughout Central America, and people who are considering the journey will hear about increased enforcement and the loss of the asylum ploy to get into our country and decide not to attempt it.
The more complaining about the new rules and enforcement, the better.
You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. [Winston Churchill.]
