Illinois is now a sanctuary state for illegal aliens. The governor has just signed a bill named the Trust Act, that prohibits state and local law enforcement in Illinois from arresting or detaining an illegal alien even if ICE has issued a detainer.
The Chicago Tribune reports, “The Republican governor’s approval of the controversial immigration legislation marks a victory for immigrant advocates … .” This is a lie; it marks a victory for illegal immigration/pro-amnesty advocates.
The population of Illinois is estimated at 12.8 million, and the number of illegal aliens is estimated between 300,000 and 450,000, which probably is closer to 1 million, given the historical undercounting of illegals in the country.
What will follow, of course, will be increased access by illegal aliens to the welfare system, driver licenses, and the ballot box. How this will improve things in a nearly bankrupt state with cities wracked with deadly violence is not explained, nor can it be.
Have those who managed Illinois into insolvency decided that the way out is more illegal immigration? Are the sanctuary cities and states that currently exist models for successful governing?
The fact is if you want less crime, you want fewer illegal aliens. Phoenix, Arizona, saw a decline in crime after it ended its sanctuary city status. In May 2008, Phoenix reversed its policy, becoming a non-sanctuary city. The police and sheriff’s deputies had full discretion to ask suspects about their immigration status and to contact ICE. Their crime rate declined because of this.
But it’s not all bad news. The states bordering Illinois have just been given a gift. If the cities in Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana now pass laws supporting local enforcement of federal immigration laws, the illegal aliens in those states will be encouraged to migrate across the border into Illinois, and everybody will be happy … except American citizens who support the law, will see their wages decline, crime rates increase, and the culture they live in descend to Third World conditions.
In the typically confused thought process of the anti-America crowd, Sophia Anderson at the Diversity Center for the University of Illinois Springfield said that making Illinois a sanctuary state for illegal aliens would help attract more immigrants.
