About 20 U.S. lawyers gave legal advice to potential asylum seekers in Tijuana, Mexico, on Friday. One can only guess what advice they were giving because reporters were not allowed inside any of the sessions being held for about 300 migrants.
The lawyers and open borders advocates met one-on-one with many of the migrants, but according to Alex Mesning, an organizer who is with the Pueblos Sin Fronteras group, they did not “coach” the asylum seekers on what to say and what not to say when they ultimately meet with U.S. immigration officers. Pueblos Sin Fronteras’ dream: To build solidarity bridges among peoples and trun down border walls imposed by greed. Their Facebook page will probably provide more up-to-date information on this situation than the news media.
Right. We can be sure that every trick, lie, and story concocted that has ever been successfully used to gain asylum to America is being carefully explained to the “caravan” members.
In a press release on April 25th, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said:
“DHS is currently monitoring the travel of the so-called ‘caravan’ towards our southern border and is doing everything within our authorities to secure our borders and enforce the law.
Let me be clear: we will enforce the immigration laws as set forth by Congress. If you enter our country illegally, you have broken the law and will be referred for prosecution. If you make a false immigration claim, you have broken the law and will be referred for prosecution. If you assist or coach an individual in making a false immigration claim, you have broken the law and will be referred for prosecution … . The smugglers, traffickers, and criminals understand our legal loopholes better than Congress and are effectively exploiting them to their advantage. This president fully understands the threat this poses to Americans and has been crystal clear since the beginning of his administration that we will protect our borders and our sovereignty.”
To think that the lawyers’ meetings in Tijuana do not cover all the legal loopholes is preposterous. The goal is to get as many admitted as possible.
This situation can be a tremendous learning situation for everyone.
The U.S. government can learn about how to strengthen both our border security and enforcement and our laws.
Those turned away, who have to make the exhausting journey back to their nation of origin will have quite a deterrent tail to tell others they know who may also be considering coming to America.
On the other hand, if the message they tell their family and friends in a phone call or email or text from any city in America is that they made it, they got in, expect the next “caravan” to have thousands and thousands of “asylum” seekers.
Yes, a learning situation for everyone.
