The billions of dollars of wages that will be earned rebuilding Houston and the surrounding areas that have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey should be paid to American workers or legal immigrants with a valid work visa.
Simple human decency and respect for the victims would expect the discussion about the supposed need for foreign workers to be delayed at least until after the threat had subsided. But some, like the former president of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, have already started touting the need for Mexican workers for the rebuilding, while people are still in danger and still being rescued! The timing of this repulsive suggestion tells us all we need to know about the cheap labor, pro-illegal alien lobby. No disaster is too bad, no amount of human suffering is too great, and no level is too low for them to stoop, to start touting the alleged “need” for foreign workers.
And because they have begun the discussion, here is the answer to these disrespectful fools:
The Texas governor and the legislature in Austin should get to work immediately on a mandatory E-Verify law for Texas, at least for the storm-damaged areas. They should require that every business involved in the rebuilding process verify the eligibility of every single worker they hire. While they’re at it, they can require all Texas government entities: state, cities, and counties to do likewise. If they don’t, Texas will suffer another flood, a flood of illegal aliens seeking jobs.
E-Verify is free. It is used over the internet. And it provides the answer to most queries instantly.
Years ago, Brenda Walker of Limits to Growth and I were making a video of a construction boss running me through the E-Verify system to demonstrate how it worked and how fast and easy it was to use.
The plan was for the boss to enter all my personal information into E-Verify over the internet and then alert us when he was about to hit the Enter key so we could show how fast the information came back. He forgot. He typed in my info and automatically hit Enter and, Bang! The response from E-Verify was so fast we didn’t get it on video tape. I was approved.
I have argued for years that I want American business to be profitable and competitive worldwide, and if we need foreign workers, let’s get them. But I want it proved that we really need them. Not just assertions, not just the lies we have heard and witnessed in videos where labor lawyers council employers how to cheat the system, and American workers, to get foreign worker visas. I want proof. And if that proof exists, we can use the system already in place to grant work visas as needed.
The disastrous effects of Harvey are heartbreaking. But, Americans … especially Texans, can and will bounce back.
But until it is absolutely proven that we don’t have enough Americans to do the long, hard job of rebuilding Houston, let’s be absolutely certain that those doing that rebuilding and earning those wages are Americans.
